A Universe of
Imagine eBay, PayPal, Amazon and UPS rolled into one. That’s Alibaba, the world’s largest e-commerce company. But ironically, few people outside its home market, China, had heard of Alibaba - until the management team decided to launch the world’s biggest IPO.
Ahead of a landmark listing on the New York Stock Exchange, we were asked to introduce the Alibaba universe of buyers and sellers to a global audience of investors and media. We needed to communicate the company’s incredible size, explain its unique structure and highlight the scale of the investment opportunity.
We created a series of eye-catching infographics to bring key content in the prospectus to life and help spread the message across social media and traditional media outlets. They were supported by a beautifully crafted animation which played out at every presentation on the US IPO roadshow, as well as online.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words - and that was certainly true in this case. Our work engaged and informed investors, generating widespread, positive media coverage. New York Times journalist Vindu Goel tweeted: “Love the cartoons in Alibaba’s IPO prospectus…” The graphics were also reproduced in Business Insider (US), Marketwatch (US), Mail Online (UK), Asia First (HK) and Stocktwits (US). Since the animation first aired in late 2014, it has received millions of views and in 2015 the campaign was awarded Best Integrated Campaign for an IPO at the Communicate Awards.
