Protecting your business against cyber threats

The topic of cybersecurity has made it onto the Government’s daily COVID-19 briefings demonstrating just how significant the ongoing threat from cyber hackers is. While the UK and US governments have warned that cyber criminals are targeting firms who are responding to the pandemic, such as pharma firms, healthcare bodies and local government, these cyber threats are faced by all types of businesses and have been increasing daily since the outbreak of the pandemic.

With vast numbers of people now working from home globally, personal and business online security is more important than ever. Hackers are also as sophisticated as ever and phishing attacks sent via email remain one of the most common ways of spreading malware and viruses.

It is a worth a reminder that 95% of cybersecurity breaches are due to human error and clicking a wrong button. The UK government has issued some practical tips on securing passwords, for example, but these are fairly generic and will need to be far more nuanced within and between organisations.

Here at MerchantCantos, we have been working with global businesses for several years to develop effective employee communications campaigns to help raise awareness and influence behaviour change both inside and outside workplaces. It’s a challenging subject which as we see with the recent warning requires a combined effort from a governmental level to C-suite to technology and IT and right down to each and every individual.
